If you are looking for a forklift truck operator training school or provider, the key factors to consider are:
- Contents of the Forklift Training Operator course
- Accreditations of the training school
- Experience and facilities
- Duration
- Locality
- Costs
Contents of the Forklift Training Operator course
The contents of the forklift operator course are set by the government and include the following:
- Basic training: the basic skills and knowledge required to operate a forklift truck safely and efficiently.
- Specific job training: knowledge and understanding of the operating principles and controls of the forklift truck to be used and how it will be used in their workplace.
- Familiarisation training: applying what has been learnt, under normal working conditions, on the job.
Ensure the forklift truck training provider follows the government guidelines regarding the contents of the course.
Accreditation
Accreditation simply means that the course is approved by a regulatory body like Road Transport Industry Training Board (RTITB). An accredited forklift training course will help when you are looking for a job.
The accreditation body like RTITB holds a database of all qualified forklift truck operators which the employers can check. Therefore, when looking for training school, make sure you check that they are an accredited forklift training provider. You will usually find this information on their website. Wallace Forklift Training is RTITB accredited.
Experience and Facilities
It is important to check the background of the training provider, which you will usually find on their website. If the training provider has many years of experience of providing forklift truck training, then it is likely that they have the experience and knowledge of what the employers are looking for and will provided accredited training to help your job prospects. Wallace has over 60 years of experience in providing forklift training.
Also check that they have the appropriate training facilities, like a dedicated warehouse to carry out the training.
Duration
At Wallace Forklift Training London, the duration of the forklift truck operator training is 4 days but the duration with different training providers may vary. Refresher training and re-certification is usually 1 day for one type of forklift truck like counterbalance, reach or pivot steer.
Locality
Ideally you should choose a training provider that is easy for you to get to, either by public transport or a car. You do not want to travel long distances, especially if you are driving as you want to be fresh and alert when you attend the forklift training course. Also this increases the costs, especially if you have to stay overnight in a hotel.
Costs
The costs of training vary depending on the forklift truck training provider. The 3 types of training providers are:
- Accredited training provider – you get training which is generally regulated and recognised by all employers
- Broker/Agent – these are generally marketing companies who book the training and then sub-contract to a forklift training provider who may or may not be accredited. We at Wallace Forklift Training do not accept bookings from Broker or Agents.
- Unaccredited training provider – these are training providers who are not accredited and hence your certificate/licence may not be recognised by most employers
The cost of training may vary but make sure you go to an accredited training provider which is recognised by all employers. Also make sure you are aware of the total cost of the training upfront and it is clearly stated on their website.
In conclusion, choose a training provider who is accredited and has appropriate facilities as this will increase your job prospects.
